Twatt Aerodrome Visit

On Wednesday, we went to HMS Tern (Twatt Aerdrome) to learn about how the drome was used during WW2.  We were met by Tommy Matches who is part of the Birsay Heritage Trust. Tommy has an excellent knowledge of Twatt Aerodrome. We certainly were able to picture what the drome would have been like during WW2.

We looked at a map of HMS Tern first.

The cinema - there would have been a nissen hut as a roof.
 Inside an air raid shelter
The squash court in the distance - there were a variety of things to keep people amused as well as taking their mind off the war.

 The control tower

There would have been 1000-1500 living at Twatt Aerodrome at one time.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to HMS Tern.  :)
