Twatt Aerodrome Visit

On Wednesday, we went to HMS Tern (Twatt Aerdrome) to learn about how the drome was used during WW2.  We were met by Tommy Matches who is part of the Birsay Heritage Trust. Tommy has an excellent knowledge of Twatt Aerodrome. We certainly were able to picture what the drome would have been like during WW2.

We looked at a map of HMS Tern first.

The cinema - there would have been a nissen hut as a roof.
 Inside an air raid shelter
The squash court in the distance - there were a variety of things to keep people amused as well as taking their mind off the war.

 The control tower

There would have been 1000-1500 living at Twatt Aerodrome at one time.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to HMS Tern.  :)

Peer assessing writing

This week, we have been looking at story openers. Yesterday in small groups we continued a story in the same style as the writer. Today we chose a different story opener and planned the next part of the story. After our writing session, we read a peer's piece of writing and put a dot in the margin if there were any spelling, grammar or punctuation errors. We all took our time and found the feedback very useful. We were able to quickly identify a mistake and correct it.

Art - Andy Warhol

In art, p6/7 have been learning about Andy Warhol and his artwork. Everyone is now attempting to draw their own pop art using famous people. Everyone concentrated really well and made a fantastic start.

Looking forward to seeing the finished product!

Personal Achievements

Well done Ella, Kieran and Millie who all participated in a Christmas Swimming Gala. Fantastic effort!

Royal Mail Letter Competition

This week we entered the Royal Mail
Letter Competition. The criteria for the competition was to write a letter explaining what your dream job would be. We all explained our reasons and included our personal skills and qualities. They were all sent 1st class today - well done p6/7!

Spelling patterns

Today we looked at our new spelling patterns for our spelling words. We were all set the challenge to write down as many words as we could with the spelling pattern. We shared some of the words we recognised with the spelling pattern.
